Looking to help the site

I was surfing through the blog today (speaking of which, is the blog still active anymore?) and stumbled on the "Distress Message" on the main page. It kinda' struck me that a site as well-designed and information-rich as this wouldn't be visited by anyone. I really like this site, and I'm looking to help you guys out. I've already written the UNSC History article, and as you can probably see, it's a lot different from any other Halo Timelines on other sites. Now, I didn't write non-canon bullsh*t in there just to make the timeline longer - I actually took some time to think through the details of the little-known Interplanetary War for instance. I added a lot of information and some speculation about why the Interplanetary War was fought in the first place, and probably the most important subject in the article was the formation of the UNSC. Just read through the "2163" section and the formation of the UNSC will become a lot more clearer (again, I didn't make anything up).

Now, what I'm trying to get at, is the fact that we already have a far more detailed UNSC timeline compared to other sites. We can use this article to further promote the site.

Here are a couple of other promoting ideas I've thought of:

1) Look for more people to assist in the writing of articles. I'm willing to help out in some of the UNSC and military articles.
2) The current webdesign is great, but it could use some "tweaking". Also, the articles have to be recategorized.
3) Forget about contacting Bungie staff such as Frank O'Connor! I tried to contact him in an attempt to arrange an interview with Joe Staten a month ago ... and what do you know? He didn't reply. It pissed me off, but it's not my place to complain, they're Bungie, they can do whatever they want.
4) We need to do something "Big". Now, the UNSC Chronicles fan fiction contest really sucks, we haven't announced any prizes, and we literally have only 2 submissions at the moment. I think I'll bring it to a stop. Right now you're thinking "What the hell?". Allow me to make my point clear: The UNSCDF (even though it's rarely being visited anymore) is a popular site among Halo fans. I think we should organize a new fan fiction contest, and bring someone famous in (like last time with Eric Nylund), maybe William Dietz? (I know it sounds stupid at the moment, but we should give it a try).
5) The forum in its current stage, is pretty ... well, weird-looking. I'd suggest we migrate it to a new host, or at least change the design.
6) We need news updates on the main page! At least once in a while, the admins should post something new on the homepage, be it annyoing, funny or serious.
7) The fan fiction section is dead! Every once in a while, someone writes a fan fic story, it should be posted on the site. (If it's good enough; we don't want to publish "OMG!!! Teh Mater Cheif tottally pwneddd a Grunt lolllzzzz!!!111")
8) Let's add something new to the articles. Have you ever seen the way articles on Halopedia are written? We should try to write them the same way, "Trivia", "Sources", "Biography" sections ... you get we're I'm going.
9) Maybe a "UNSCDF" multiplayer clan would be a good idea? (Awkward silence)
10) Post a "Featured Event" or "Featured Article" announcement on the main page, just like Halopedia. For instance, we could feature a brief paragraph about a particular event in the Haloverse on the main page.
11) A monthly newsletter would also be a good idea.
12) A podcast maybe? :D

With that being said, I hope you guys can do something to bring this site back to life. And if it's not too much to ask for *gulp*, can I be a part of the team? Like I said before, I would like to write some military and UNSC-related articles.

PS. Now and again, I'm online on MSN Messenger. Maybe we could collaborate better over live messaging. My ID is unsctrooper@hotmail.com

I'm really sorry for the long post. Merry Christmas!! wink

a lot of grand ideas there, pretty good, i think we could take some influences from halopedia as well as using our own, personally, i have a little pet project going on for UNSCDF, anyway, you should talk to major silva, hes pretty much de facto head around here now

Sure thing. Also, would it be alright if I started writing an article about the UNSC military tactics, such as Marine Corps, Army and Navy? I won't rip it off Halopedia, trust me. I'll try to keep it as original as possible, besides, Halopedia doesn't even have dedicated articles on military tactics.

This is if you guys really want to...

Note: Current staff will become "UNSCDF Staff" role upon user approval by me. Everyone else will still have to be approved by me.

Sweet. Can the posts from this forum be migrated to the PhpBB3 one? If not, it still rocks!

I like the podcast idea. I have Garageband on my computer, so I can record it in iTunes format. I'm not sure how to network it so many of us can talk, though.

I still think promoting the site through the Anstice Brigade would be a good idea. Spartan 472 is in charge of that. (Are these names really known throughout the Halo community? Wu is, so is Frankie. I saw Silva on HBO, once)

A link is here: http://83odst.unscdf.net/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=3&thread_id=1190

Well let's hope someone from the staff can see these ideas. Maybe some of them will come true, at least the simpler ones like the Podcast. wink

I was surfing through the blog today (speaking of which, is the blog still active anymore?)
Funny that I updated it the day after you (apparently) posted this.  Sorry, haven't been on the forum recently.

I tried to contact him in an attempt to arrange an interview with Joe Staten a month ago ... and what do you know? He didn't reply.
Not his fault.  Either he's not giving out the current email he's using, or he just hasn't checked his current one he's giving out.  Either way, it's not because he doesn't care.  Fluffaluffer sent both Frankie, some-admin-from-another-site-I-can't-remember-right-now, and I an email about Planet Halo's Do Something Amazing contest, asking for newsposts.  Our two sites were updated with a newspost.  Guess which one wasn't?  B.net.  If he would actually ignore someone as big as Fluffaluffer from a place as big as Planet Halo, then that guy's got some huge.. guts.

I think it's more of problem with email.

We need to do something "Big".
Too bad MLG's doing that "Forge the Foundary" contest, because I had thought of doing something like that for the site a while back.  Only question would be prizes (people like Microsoft Points though..).  Trying something like that now would brand us as copy cats.  Copy cats with much weaker prizes hmm.

The forum in its current stage, is pretty ... well, weird-looking.
Not moving anytime soon.  Sorry, UnrealChief.  Same with the site re-design.

We need news updates on the main page! At least once in a while, the admins should post something new on the homepage, be it annyoing, funny or serious.
This was tried before.. and that experiment pretty much failed.  I've now taken upon the task of being the Louis Wu of the site.  Basically they make the content, I'll put it up.  I still make & post my own stuff though.

The fan fiction section is dead! Every once in a while, someone writes a fan fic story, it should be posted on the site.
Umm.. we've only got one submission.  It's on the FF section.  It also got a news post.

Maybe a "UNSCDF" multiplayer clan would be a good idea?
Well, we got three people who have Live.  Me, Steve, and LoneRanger.  One of those doesn't have a mic and doesn't want to get a mic (LR).  That's not much of a clan.  If we had fans who also had Live though, it'd be a different story.

I've recently come to grips with the site being a "passive" site.  We offer content that people think is really cool.  They might even bookmark us because of it.  But is it the kind of stuff you join forums for and send in stuff to?  No.  We've found our niche, and I'm happy with it.

Post a "Featured Event" or "Featured Article" announcement on the main page, just like Halopedia. For instance, we could feature a brief paragraph about a particular event in the Haloverse on the main page.
Like this idea.  Will try.

A monthly newsletter would also be a good idea.
Going to who, exactly?  The staff?  We've tried this before, and nobody signed up.

A podcast maybe? :D
I love this.  I've pushed for it and pushed for it back when CK was main admin, but to no avail.  Hell, we passed up the opportunity to be on Podtacular because of that guy (said he'd "look into it", never did anything).  I think it would be an awesome feature, even if we used a freakin' Custom Games Lobby as a means to get us all together and recorded that.  If LoneRanger would get a FREAKING MIC and stop being Mr. Self Concious (his excuse is he focuses on the game, but I don't buy that) we could have a nice roundtable of me, Steve, LR, you (?) and whatever "guest" we have on.

Could be neat.

can I be a part of the team?
Yep.

Spartan 472 is in charge of that. (Are these names really known throughout the Halo community? Wu is, so is Frankie. I saw Silva on HBO, once)
Can say I've heard of 'em..  And I've been featured (mentioned) on HBO 16 times biggrin!  Not all for the site, mind you.

I think our best bet for advertising would be to just use the crap out of the Gamespy Megaphone tool.  Basically, it gets us on the front page of Planet Halo, as well as our very own news box on the site (permanent, since no other PH hosted site is active :)).  I'll be trying to do this more and more often.  If only I could change the "posting" name - currently it's under what appears to be CK's real name - Thomas Celaya.

Can't find where to change that though.  Heh, I did find out CKs phone number and address looking for a way to change it!  Heh. biggrin

I'm glad you liked some of the ideas! By the way, I sent you the "History of the UNSC" article via email. I'm also going to write articles on the UNSC Army, Marine Corps and Navy, and probably some other weapon articles. Good luck on your endeavors, Silva! :)

Wait, I never replied to your email? THAT'S why I "kept it as new" I guess. I did download it, however.

I'll try to write it from both the games and the outside perspective. And yes, I've already started my research, don't worry. wink

I would enjoy writing an article about the flood/forerunner.

I don't know anything about making machinimas. However, I'm sure someone here has some experience in dealing with game engines. Just look at the Community page on the site.

In regard to writing articles, make sure you send it to Major Silva. I've sent him the History of the UNSC article, but he hasn't replied. Hopefully he will be active again, 'cause he's the only one with access to the site's Control Panel.

You have to email it to Major Silva, as he is the only one able to edit the site right now.

What's goin on now?  We're making a machinima again?
____________________________

And just to update everyone, it's true I've been "preoccupied" for a while now.  What with the Grifball League Tournament thing (yes, I'm representing the HBO Forum.. I originally wanted to represent us, but figured we'd be made up of almost entirely fans.. and LoneRanger with his whole "I don't need no mic" attitude), and meeting various members of MLG (OMG eye talked 2 teh WALSHY!!) - some are even on my Friends List.

All that being said, I've got that "updating feeling" in the pit of my stomach again, so I'll be returning to work soon.  Like, now-ish.  Expect to see an update of some kind to the site by tonight.  UNSC Trooper will likely be happy.

P.S. you need LIVE so I just assume that you have it.

I'll help. I've helped with a machinima before (in Halo 3), though it never got off the ground. I also have a "director's eye". Don't ask me what that means.. I just made it up really.

So yeah, I'll be a puppeteer. If you need anyone else to help I can grab some people off of my Friends List - random online people, Grunts R Us people, hell maybe some MLG folks will help. They love montages at least.

As for a machinima for US. We actually had an idea for one before the game came out. In fact, somebody wrote a script for it (was it Steve, maybe?). It was a pretty funny concept (making fun of ourselves, basically). Hell, I still remember a lot from it. I could just re-write the thing and send it on over to you. I have a few more ideas for skits within the old as well that I'd like to add. I'll whip something up this weekend.

Perhaps my comic-directions that I made for Replika for TelTura will translate over to good machinima directions. Maybe.

Either way, I want this to get off the ground. srrsly

I can be a puppeteer, but with my track practice every day and track meets pretty often, I don't know reliable I can be.
